Nanomesher ProdBoard LIRC issues

I recently bought a Nanomesher ProdBoard which includes an LIRC-compatible IR receiver and remote.
However, after hours of troubleshooting, I understand that LIRC has reached end of life and is not supported in the latest kernel version.
Does anyone know a version of raspbian that still supports LIRC or any other options to get the IR receiver working?
