Anyone have issues getting the Classic Controller working with a PS3?

I saw online before buying one that they are compatible with PS3s and playing PS1 games via backwards compatibility. Mine arrived today and when I plugged it in, it recognized the O as the X. Loaded up RE1 and the DPad no longer worked.
Too bad, I thought this would work well on a PS3 :( anyone have different results?
