FM Sound, a lot of questions

Ok, so here is the deal. I’m just recently interested in acquiring a MS, my reason, Phantasy Star. And while doing my research I stumbled upon the FM Sound thing and it sound so incredible.
I know the NA version of the game has this feature removed, however that’s not a problem with all the hackroms and repros.
The real question is, how to play an FM game with American hardware? I’ve seen a mod with a custom PCB but that thing is old, and expensive, any other alternatives? Is the JP SMS cartridge slot different? I know the JP SMS has the FM chip built in.
