How to play Famicom games like Japan Castlevania 3 on NES Classic

I've been wanting to play the Japanese version of Castlevania III (Akumajou Densestu) on the NES Classic for a while, and I tried setting it up today, using the FCEUmmExtreme core for RetroArch, but it booted me back to the NES Classic menu. Just wanted some help as to what I might be doing wrong and what core or setup I need to do in order for this game to work on the system. Thanks
