Resolution stuck at what I assume to be the NES default

When playing gameboy or n64 games, the resolution is stuck at what I’m pretty sure is the NES default. I’ve tried changing the resolution from the Retroarch menu, but it doesn’t change anything. I’m convinced that that’s not the highest resolution the console can output because the Retroarch menu itself is at a much higher resolution. My guess is, n64 will slow down drastically with higher graphics, but I’d like to at least try.
