DS Lite or DS game region

Hi can anyone advice me on the following issue. I was about to buy a ds lite from a friend today but my pokemon diamond(USA) it could not detect the game. But when I slot in his game cartridge(EU) it was able to detect. But from what I have been searching on Google DS lite doesnt have region lock? So why is this happening? I even did the old school move of blowing the cartridge. Thank you!!
