just installed hackchi 2 CE 3.8

I just installed Hackchi 2 CE on my SNES classic and noticed something really odd. While playing the game I have lost all control of my television. The remote doesn't allow me to change the volume, input or even turn it off. And neither am I able to use the buttons on the TV to do anything, the only way to change this is to unplug the TV and plug it back in. However, after a minute or so it goes back to being unchangeable. For context, the TV is an older plasma 24" Insignia (not a smart TV) with just two HDMI inputs.

ps. when I power down the SNES classic, it just sits there saying SHUTTING DOWN... with the lower quarter of the screen distorted.
