was "master system" an accidental naming was it really the "power base"?

i know that sega embraced the name but there was a sega base system that just has a game and controllers and the master system that had a gun and 3d glasses and all the accesssories were labeled for the "sega power base" and the genesis adapter was not called the master system converter

did it fail becuase it was a schitzo sytem with 3 names the sega.the master system, the power base
