2DS not turning on

Hi, my 2DS has issues when I press the power button 90% of the time nothing happens . If I persist after a couple of tries it does turn on. When turning it off, it doesn't have this problem one click the power button and the turn off screen shows up. I checked the batter compartment and there was some brown liquid like substance (not a lot) but it didn't seem to come from the battery although the batter had some on it. I opened it up again (after a few days) and there wasn't anything this time.
Could this be a problem with the battery? This unit is less than 1.5 years old
To confirm this is the 2DS (the flat one)
