It’s been a busy few months here at Arcade Blogger towers, but I’m delighted this week to share something new with you that I’ve been a part of – a new podcast!
This is an idea that I’ve had brewing for some time, but wasn’t quite sure what direction to go in or how to go about it. But at last year’s Free Play Florida event, I was able to spend some quality time with fellow Brits, Paul Drury and Richard May – and over several evening dinners, we fleshed out the idea, which has blossomed into a podcast that we call The Ted Dabney Experience. Frankly, I couldn’t be working with two better co-hosts:
Paul Drury has written for Retro Gamer magazine since 2004, and pens a weekly column for his local newspaper. He regularly hosts talks with Golden Age videogame luminaries at events like Play Expo and Free Play Florida.
And Richard May was the co-founder of online design magazine Pixelsurgeon, moving image company Wyld Stallyons and graphic art collective Black Convoy. From 1999 to 2018 he worked as a freelance illustrator for clients such as Wired, Edge Magazine and Time. He is also a collector of classic arcade games.
The idea is simple: we will be hosting what we hope are smart conversations with leading lights from the Golden Age of video arcade gaming.
Our inaugural episode sees us talking candidly with Q*Bert co-creator Warren Davis about the early days of videogame design at Gottlieb, lost Laserdisc classic Us Vs Them, his time at Williams Electronics working alongside Eugene Jarvis and even hanging out with the band Aerosmith.
Given we are all in lockdown twiddling our thumbs, now is as good a time as any for us to launch this new venture, and I hope everyone here will have a listen to our first episode. If you enjoy what I do here at Arcade Blogger, this should be right up your street.
