Cracking shells on NN3DS

[Released: 2011] The 3DS is similar to the DS, but is capable of projecting stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. A redesigned "XL" version of the console was also released.

Cracking shells on NN3DS

Hello people, I have an Ambassador ed. NN3DS. ever since the day I got it I took out the ambassador shells and put on the included Smash Bros. ones. I've not used it for well over a year, and when I took it out of the case a couple days ago I noticed the shells are cracked. Like, properly cracked. They look as if they were about to split. It has never been dropped, hit, or mistreated in any way.
Is this normal in all shells or just a problem with early ones? I wanted to swap back the ambassador ones, but I think I won't now if they have to crack like these ones. Thanks!
