Gameboy modding

I want a bit of a hobby and I’ve recently become interested in moding gameboys. I want to do the basic stuff like backlight mods and shells but I don’t know what gameboy to do it on the colour seems cool but I’ve heard it hard to do so a gba or gbasp seem more reasonable. I have no soldering experience but I really want to learn. Any suggestions on what gameboy to buy and what mods are good for beginners should be greatly appreciated.
