Curious if I can save money

I aquired a tg 16 fairly recently and was looking into the CD add on. Unfortunately, everything TurboGrafx cd is expensive. I typically buy broken hardware that I know I can fix and was wondering if I could get a broken super cd rom 2 that does not need the IFU or dock and has a built in super system card. Fix it up, either by replacing the capacitors or the laser. And plug it into the back of the tg 16. My research has led me to the issue that the expansion ports have a different shape, but I can shave off any plastic that is in the way. If I managed to plug the super cd rom 2 into the tg 16. Would it work?
