Pokemon Y freezes when I try to delete the save data

Hello, I'm having troubles with my Pokemon Y save. Loading up the game is fine, but I'm unable to progress because the game itself won't save correctly. The save message prompts each time, but when I load it up again, it's as if I made no progress.
I decided to start over and delete the data, but the game freezes after I click Yes to the "Is it really OK to delete this saved data?" question. It stays stuck on that screen indefinitely, I have to hold down the power button or remove the cartridge to do anything.
Would anyone have a solution to this?
