It’s time for another new game to talk about, although all we have to go on is one photo. That hasn’t stopped us before, as there is enough to glean from what is shown. I did reach out to Raw Thrills about this, but they don’t have any comment about it for now.
Konami’s Frogger is one game that doesn’t need an introduction. It has long enjoyed the status of a classic, first finding a home in arcades before being ported to just about everything under the sun. But like many classics, it hasn’t “returned home” to coin-op – until now. Here’s the lone cabinet image I was sent, then we’ll analyze:
Starting with the marquee at the top, this is an official work by both Konami & Raw Thrills. I’m guessing that it hasn’t been in development for terribly long, since the software is running in the World’s Largest Pac-Man that Raw Thrills developed for Bandai Namco back in 2016 – something that they must not have had time to reskin for the control panel and underscreen carriage.
It’s also possible that they didn’t change anything on the control panel as they have something completely different in the works for that part of the game – a unique design or perhaps a different type of control scheme.
Looking at the game screen, you’ll notice that this is configured differently from standard Frogger, while maintaining the same look (the screen tearing is an effect from the camera and the screen being a giant LED billboard). The river shows up in-between the streets, and there are only three slots that you aim to guide Frogger to. There are a number of collectibles on the playfield, including two flies and what looks to be a pot or berry (hard to tell).
It’s safe to assume that this shares some aspects that Raw Thrills has instituted with their other retro remakes. That includes multiple levels with different aspects & layouts, 2-player co-op, Amusement and redemption modes.
How many rounds there are, we don’t know – same with any other additions/deletions/changes to the original Frogger concept. It’s also important to keep in mind that the final product can go through many adjustments, depending on how testing goes (the cabinet will certainly change).
It would be cool if this is made available to convert World’s Largest Pac-Man units with; we’ll also have to see if there’s additional Konami games that they would throw into this (WLP also features Galaga).
While it is unknown which location it is located at, you can tell from the environment that it is a Dave & Busters. So depending upon which D&B you frequent this weekend, you’ll probably get a chance to see it.
