Any way to tell what rom hacks won't run in Canoe?

I'm not asking for a list of rom hacks that will/won't run. I am curious if there has been any research into what elements cause a hack to be incompatible. Many SMW hacks run fine, but others will not run at all. Some mostly work but have broken elements or glitches within.
