What are the signs your HDD is dying in your PS2?

I have a 5 year old 1TB HDD. I have been using it in my PS2 for about a month and have had games get hung up when loading on occasion, and have also had the screen flash to black for about 1 second about every thirty minutes as well, and I am concerned that my HDD may be dying and is the cause of these problems. if it is, then that's ok, 1TB drives are pretty cheap these days, but if it isn't I'd like to avoid spending the money.
