Hot Take: PS3 along with Xbox 360 had this “eternal” feel no other consoles have.

These consoles felt like the penultimate console in gaming. Compared to Sony and Microsoft’s predecessors having a feel that they were great for their time, but one could see the potential the PS3 would have as the “singularity” of the PlayStation and even Xbox development journey. Caterpillar, Cocoon, Butterfly.

The PS3 felt like an eternal console in the sense that it lasted over a decade as a generation of gaming so to speak, and had a feeling that the world could adapt to the PS3 forever, rather than PlayStation needing to adapt to the world with newer versions, which are great, but not the same.

It felt like the most familiar console era to gamers, yet simultaneously feels like the one that had the most to still discover, more time in its generation.

Console development today feel reactive, gearing development to fit a trend or social target, while the era of the PS3 was more proactive, just developing to be the best version of themselves they could be, for as long as they could. All these things made it special
