Dragon Warrior 3 tips/tricks?

I'm pretty inexperienced with JRPGS and have never gotten into the genre besides Pokemon gen 1 & 2. I always hear about Dragon Quest and decided to randomly start Dragon Warrior 3. I wanted to play the NES version because the music and pixel art remind me of Pokemon. Does anybody have any tips to make the game easier for a JRPG noob? Concerned with increasing efficiency.

I'm using the party recommended by the game. The structures are very maze like. My healer keeps running out of MP so I keep having to leave to visit the Inn/get supplies and don't remember the dungeon/cave layout when returning. Do JRPG players draw the map as they play? Is there something I can get that replenishes MP so I don't need to return to town?

Full disclosure: I am using save states but limiting them to towns only
