Black screen?

Hey all! Short, but kinda panicked question: I bought a super Nintendo and Super Mario Land for my brother for Christmas.

I connected the console, set the TV to channel 3, put in the cartridge and switched on the TV.

But I get a black screen. Changed to channel 4, same thing. When I switch off the console I get static, which is a good sign in my books.

Now my question: is it the console, is it the cartridge, or am I doing something wrong?
