Best way to play Dragon Force?

I have a real SS controller, I have the RalphNet adapter. I'm not talking about which emulator to use (though I am using Mednafenne w Mednaffe GUI, seems perfect so far), I'm talking about should I play this game blind or, should I need to read more than just the manual, how selective do I need to be. I don't want to stumble on the strategy which destroys the game for me. I remember back in the day playing one of the Saturn football games (Sega Worldwide maybe) and either reading or stumbling on a tactic letting me destroy the CPU usually.

So, I'm just gonna read the manual, unless someone can tell me what else I can read to enhance my playthrough (lore?) and/or maybe there's something NOT mentioned that would increase my QOL. Not planning on abusing save-states, etc.
