Ninja: Shadow of Darkness crashing on level 4?

So I’ve been playing Ninja: Shadow of Darkness on PlayStation 1 and I encountered an issue with the game crashing at the end of the monastery level. It happened 3 times so I thought nothing of it and ordered a disc only copy on eBay. To my dismay, this copy also freezes at the end of this level.

This is so strange because both copies run buttery smooth until this point. The other end of stage cutscenes seem to work just fine. Does anyone know what this could be? I’m playing on PS2 slim with normal disc speed but I don’t see Ninja: Shadow of Darkness on any list that says it doesn’t run well on PS2. Could it be that it changes aspect ratio or something like that? Any help would be appreciated.
