Why won’t my 360 Model E play Original XBox Games?

[Released: 2005] As the second console from Microsoft, the XBOX 360 completely sold out upon release in all regions except in Japan. About 33% of all consoles became defective making it the most unreliable console ever created.

Why won’t my 360 Model E play Original XBox Games?

I recently just got my first XBox 360 (was a PS guy for a long time) and I had read that the 360 had a pretty good sized list of backward compatible games with the original XBox. So I bought the original version of Fable to try it out. It is on the list of games that were ‘made’ compatible. I connected to XBox Live and have the most recent version of the dashboard. But my 360 E will not play the disc.
Any ideas on why?
