Can you use a regular USB cable to charge a GBA SP?

Can you use a regular USB cable to charge a GBA SP?

I saw another post a few years ago saying ..."USB is close enough in spec to the GBA SP charger that they are pretty much interchangeable so no modification is necessary." Is that true?
Is there another option for charging cables besides the crappy ones available everywhere where ppl complain the connection is too tight and can damage the port? Are the crappy ones all made by 1 mystery supplier that bad?
