why doesnt my duelshock 1 work with some ps2 games?

basically, i use a duelshock 1 because the only ps2 controller i have at the moment is a ****ty third party one that doesn't feel good to use. plus, i have 3 psx controllers for some reason lol.
however some games just... won't recognise the duelshock 1 whereas others will? so with a few games i have to use the ****ty third party one. it's not really a huge issue, im just curious on why some games recognise it and some won't. does anyone know why this is?
