PSA: You don’t need a modchip. There are softmods for PS1.

[Released: 1994] Sony entered into an agreement with Nintendo to develop a CD-ROM attachment, for the Super Nintendo. Due to contractual problems it was never released, and instead, a modified version was introduced by Sony called the PlayStation.

It’s 2022, you don’t need to install a modchip unless you want to. No need for disc swapping either.
There are a few softmods available that cover what modchips allow, plus more. Unirom is an excellent tool.
For more info or help, I suggest asking on the subreddit’s Discord, the community there helped get me up and running. Unfortunately there are a few barriers to entry still, but hopefully you can find a way of getting a softmod working with your setup.
It would be helpful if some form of this info was pinned on the subreddit.
