Pi4 to VGA question.

I’m hoping somebody can help me out. I have a arcade cabinet that has been running a Pi3 for years. I just upgraded to a Pi4 and bought a micro HDMI to VGA adapter but can’t seem to get anything outside of the splash screen to show on the monitor. I have tried adjusting the resolution to 640X480 but still no dice. Any ideas from the brain trust?
