Rasberry Pi 4 B Router with OpenWrt not working outside my home.

I followed a video by Networkchuck and made a VPNed wifi router with my device. Everything works perfectly and according to his tutorial however, it only works from home (which defeats the purpose) I’m not sure if this gets wifi like a true router or if it only pulls wifi from Public Wi-Fi’s (which would also defeat the purpose??!) And then what if that Public wifi requires a password?
Anyone who knows more about this please help! I followed this tutorial
