SMB 4K video server?

I'm using samba on rpi4 to share a USB hardrive over the network, it works fine for accessing work files between my macbook and pc, but I want to also store 4K footage and raw photos. However only the first 5 seconds of videos or so will load in vlc media player from my pc. (connected over cat5 eth)
I know people use rpi to store whole films so what am I doing wrong? Ta!
