What's the trick to the boss with the club in Kenseiden?

I beat Kenseiden for the first time yesterday and love the game overall, but man that boss with the spiked club in the Iyo stage is just an absolute pain. It seems his hitbox just appears and disappears whenever the game feels like it. I figured you have to be some exact number of pixels away to damage him, but I can never find a pattern. It feels utterly random. Is there an actual consistent strategy to beat this guy or do you just have to slash away and hope to kill him before he kills you?
