USB devices disappear

Post by /RaspberryPi »

I had set up a NAS server with the Pi and a USB hard drive, and noticed a few days ago that backups were failing. After looking into I noticed the drive had disappeared from the USB bus, and the only thing I could find to do is reboot to bring it back. I tried plugging in some flash drive I had, and it also disappears after some time, so I think I can eliminate the hard drive as the culprit.
Right now I've unplugged everything.
lsusb when USB isn't working:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
lsusb after reboot:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 2109:3431 VIA Labs, Inc. Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
It just started this week, so I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware problem, or what further troubleshooting steps I should take. I hope I don't have to buy a new board.
