Question re: the Turbografx-16 Mini controller

Recently got a Turbografx-16 Mini as I missed the original system back in the day and the disc add-on is a bit steep. I'm enjoying a lot of these games, but I find I keep taking damage because the d-pad isn't particularly good. If I press down to crouch, but my thumb lands even slightly to the left or right of the dead center of the down button, the character will turn left or right while crouching. My question is if this was a problem with the Turbografx-16 controller back in the day? If not, is it a consistent problem with the Mini or just my controller?
