Weird bug in sonic 1?

I just recently bought a Genesis model 2 with a few games from a local games store, with the first Sonic game being one of them. I bought a copy a few days ago and tried it out, it will boot up fine, however when I get to the game-play Sonic would teleport to the bottom of the screen and immediately die after a few seconds of playing. (this happens on the demo screen too) I couldn't seem to find anything online about this so I returned the copy and got another one.
This other copy of the game is doing the exact same thing. I have no idea what is going on here. Out of all of the games I have played on the console, this is the only one that seems to be having a problem. Does anyone happen to know what this could be? Did I just happen to buy 2 broken games?
