French Master System and the box cable

[Released: 1985] One of the most unusual features of the Sega Master System is its dual media inputs: one cartridge slot and one card slot. The card slot accepted small cards about the size of a credit card.

French Master System and the box cable

Post by /markiiisystem »

I wondered if anyone knew why Sega designed the French Master Systems as they did? They only wanted to output RGB so they removed the RF port and then also removed the CXA1145 video chip. This meant they needed to make the box in the SCART cable to amplify and attenuate the signal before it hits the TV
If Sega just wanted to send RGB over the AV port, why not just remove the RF port and then leave it as it is? Then make a SCART cable with no box on it. Block the composite video pin if you really wanna make sure a non-secam signal is sent out. Why remove a chip from inside of the machine just to put something similar back into the box on the cable?
thanks for this, I appreciate its a niche question :)
