Is there any way to test the Light Phaser?

[Released: 1985] One of the most unusual features of the Sega Master System is its dual media inputs: one cartridge slot and one card slot. The card slot accepted small cards about the size of a credit card.

I think my Light Phaser is not working properly. It's incredibly difficult to hit things in Safari Hunt. I haven't even tried other games. I'm playing on a CRT, and I've tried both RGB and Composite connections. There's not much to fail in the Light Phaser but is there a known decay of the sensor? It seems like it's randomly adjusting the target location by some amount. I tried taking it apart and cleaning the lens, no change.
