Trying, unsuccessfully, to pair SNES wireless controller and 8bitdo retro receiver

I have the 8bitdo retro receiver which plugs into the controller port on the SNES Classic and the official wireless SNES controllers from Nintendo (see links). The controllers work great on a PC/Mac but I can’t get them to connect to the 8bitdo retro receiver. Anyone have any tips?
