Pros/Cons of home brewing a 3ds?

[Released: 2011] The 3DS is similar to the DS, but is capable of projecting stereoscopic 3D effects without the use of 3D glasses or additional accessories. A redesigned "XL" version of the console was also released.

Pros/Cons of home brewing a 3ds?

I have pretty modest technical skill, but I’m pretty decent for someone who’s self taught. However, I’ve never modded a device before, and I really want to install custom software on my 3ds. How easy is it, what are the pros/cons, and should I do it?
