Turbo Grafx 16 Controller Port issues

Hey everyone. I recently purchased a TG 16 online and I just got it a day ago. I have the turbo stick and turbo pad, and I tested them both out and every time I click left on d-pad and on the turbo stick controller, it will pause the game, and every time I move left it it unpause, then pause. I know it has something to do with the controller port. Any idea on how I can fix this issue?
