Why did Microsoft use a box for their HD av pack?

[Released: 2001] The Xbox was Microsoft's first video game console after collaborating with Sega to port Windows CE to the Dreamcast console and was the first console offered by an American company after the Atari Jaguar stopped sales in 1996.

The monster cables, modded 360 cables, and even microsofts own 2nd revision /release component cables show that it's possible to get great video quality without a box being needed. So I'm curious why they used it for the first go around.
