A misfortune worth 30 Euros

[Released: 1998] Born out of Sega's darkest hour to decide whether the company stays in the hardware business. Even though it didn't officially last long in the US, it was continued selling in Japan and spawned some great 2D Japanese shooters.

A misfortune worth 30 Euros

Post by /dreamcast »

I excitedly came home from work, because my package with Dreamcast mods from AliExpress finally arrived. I opened up my console and installed both the GDEMU and the DreamPSU. For some reason, the fan being held in with a metal mount and its connector having two pins instead of three didn't set of any alarm bells in my head. I just connected the system to my TV, turned it on, and...

Nothing. No image, no sound, just... nothing. The LED turned on, the VMU beeped and lit up for a second, but that was it.

It turns out the used Dreamcast I got from Japan is a VA0 model💀

But, this story has a happy end!

I found VA1 on Mercari through Sendico, a buyee-esque shipping service for buying stuff from Japan in case you didn't know.

Not only does it have a VA1 motherboard and its operation confirmed, but it already has the battery holder and self-resetting fuse installed :D And it luckily wasn't that expensive, so I will eventually be able to play Cosmic Smash on real hardware😁
