Arducam motorised focus camera (imx477) not focusing

I've just received this camera, and have been trying it out with my Pi 4B.

I'm following this guide: https://docs.arducam.com/Raspberry-Pi-Camera/Motorized-Focus-Camera/quick-start/, but when using the example python app FocuserExample.py, I'm not seeing any evidence that the motor is working - I can see the image from the camera, but the focus never changes.

I've got I2C enabled, and there don't seem to be any errors. Is there anything else I should be investigating or does it sound like I have a defective unit?
