Am I missing something with Crazy Taxi?

How on earth are the special moves supposed to work? The Crazy Dash in particular is nearly impossible to perform. I was trying the Crazy Jump trial for about 15 minutes, I just could not get that move to work. I actually thought I was doing something wrong, so I looked up a guide, and no, I'm doing nothing wrong, it's just that the timing on the move is that picky. It doesn't help that the one guide I found is a lying piece of crap. It says there's supposed to be a delay between when you hit the gear shift and hit the gas, but the ONLY way I got the Crazy Dash to work was by hitting both buttons at the same time, and even then the move only works when it feels like it.

What on earth am I doing wrong?
