8bitdo M30 2.4g compatibility (SMD + ED Pro)

I recently purchased a pair of 8bitdo M30 2.4g's for my Mega Drive 2 - fantastic upgrade and great to be cable free.

My old Master System packed it in a while ago, so I simply use my converter (or ED Pro) to play SMS games on the SMD.

So far I have had no luck using the M30 controllers with my SMD to play SMS games - they do not register at all.

Anyone know of a workaround?
