What's the most important stat to focus on in Zelda 2?

Haven't played it in years and never beat it. What's the stat I should be focusing on leveling up first? also is it true that against Dark Link your strength stat doesn't make a difference and you always do the same amount of damage against him? this is what I've heard once.
