what is the purpose of the wave beam in Metroid?

Post by /nes »

That is what I've always wondered:

- you don't use the wave beam to beat the game (freeze the metroids). But, CAN you finish the game with it? Can you beat mother brain with it? Do you have to avoid the metroids?

- does that factor into why they put the ice beam two places in the game? Because if you get it first, however then you get the wave beam, you can still get the ice beam again and complete the game?

- are you supposed to get the wave beam FIRST? When we were kids we would get the ice beam and then beat the bosses and mother brain. But We never got the wave beam because you didn't need it. But maybe if you got the wave beam first, it makes some stuff easier, and THEN you get the ice beam?

Were you intended to use the ave beam for any noticeable portion of the game? Can you share what it was meant to do?
