Looking for old action adventure game - bearded character, purple clothes, asian themed(?)

Me and my brother had this game growing up, a side slider adventure where you play this male character, he's got dark hair, beard (that's how i remember it at least) and purple clothes. The first boss is an asian style face mask/head. And I think you can switch levels via special doors if you choose to enter. I think sometimes you could omit them, maybe even go back? I'm not sure.

I do remember it as a rather unique game and would love to see it again.
