Link cable help - games wont fully connect - Bushido Blade 2, Doom

So far I've tested Doom and Bushido Blade 2. Bushido Blade connects, then goes through the weapon and level selection, then goes to the loading screen with blood spatters, and then kicks both players back to the main menu.
With Doom, it just stays on the "waiting to connect" screen for both players.
Now I'm trying Cool Boarders 2 and I can't even see an option to get into link mode. I managed to find a youtube video but it only shows the process AFTER it appears to have already booted into some sort of link mode.
Ive been waiting for years and years to finally play PS1 system link, and so far not a single one has managed to work :(
