Why does a game like goemon run so well on this system?

[Released: 1996] The console's design was revealed to the public for the first time in late Spring 1994. The N64 console was frequently marketed as the world's first 64-bit gaming system and sold 500,000 units in North America during its first four months.

Why does a game like goemon run so well on this system?

Post by /n64 »

I've recently been trying to get into N64 after neglecting it for..well as long as it's existed.
First game I've tried is mystical ninja starring goemon and I'm amazed at how well it runs. I remember a lot of N64 games just being a total mess FPS-wise. It doesn't seem like this is emulation as videos of real hardware show it running that well too. I think the only other game I've played, mario 64 had similar performance.
What was so different that made Zelda, Goldeneye, Turok etc run do badly? Were they that much more advanced? Because I think goemon looks awesome. Are there any other recommendations for 3D N64 adventure games that have rock solid performance?
