How to play Sensible Soccer/Championship Soccer '94?

Hello, I can't get a game going in Sensible Soccer. Everytime a game starts, no matter what mode or tournament I'm in, I can't do anything when the game starts. If I press any of the buttons it takes me back to the menu. What am I missing here?
