Analog stick problems

Hi Im using a retro fighters defender controller and I have no clue why but retro arch is being such a fussy POS with it, at first it detected the analog sticks fine but now it only detects them on the main project eris menu and not within the retro arch menu or within the games even when Iv switched the controller type to dualshock, is this a problem with the defender controller or is retroarch just very finicky with its controllers?
